LCSO serves all of Lafayette County, including the town of Mayo and the communities of Day, Cooks Hammock, and Hatchbend.
LT. Lonny Hempstead, End of Watch: 08/10/2021
Lieutenant Lonny Hempstead died from complications as the result of contracting COVID-19 during a confirmed exposure while serving a search warrant.
Lieutenant Hempstead was a Florida Army National Guard veteran and had served with the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office for 26 years. He is survived by his wife, two children, two grandchildren, and parents.

In Memory Of
Sheriff Norman Pearson, End of Watch: 10/24/1931
Sheriff Norman Pearson was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man for illegally transporting liquor. He was shot in the stomach
several times and died after being transported to a hospital. The suspect was arrested and sentenced to prison.
Sheriff Pearson had served with the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office for nearly two years. He was survived by his wife and 10 children.

In Memory Of
Sheriff William B. Mathis, End of Watch: 02/25/1901
Sheriff Mathis was shot and killed by a murder suspect that he and his posse were in pursuit of. A few hours earlier, the suspect had shot and
mortally wounded a naval stores operator in his commissary on the Suwanee River. When Sheriff Mathis came upon the suspect, a demand to surrender was met with gunfire. Sheriff Mathis fell mortally wounded but was able to return fire and killed the suspect.
